How can I install a dishwasher ?

Dishwashers are very easy to install. You just have to keep in mind that it should have its own power supply; meaning, it should not be sharing electricity with other devices. The tools and materials you will need are screwdrivers, pliers, wire strippers, voltage tester, electrical tape, wire connectors, 20-amp breaker, 12-2 NM cable and a romex connector and stripper.

If you are only replacing your old dishwasher, you already have a circuit and all you need is to install the new dishwasher. If it is your first time installing a dishwasher, you must run 12-2 NM cable to where you will be installing your dishwasher from the electrical panel. Then, you have to place a 20-amp breaker at the panel specifically for the dishwasher. Make sure that the breaker is off before you touch any wiring. You can use a voltage tester to make sure.

You should leave around two to three feet of NM cable at the back of the dishwasher, to ensure you could pull it back out for maintenance or troubleshooting would be easy. You will see a metal junction box behind the dishwasher near the base. Unscrew the cover and remove it, you will see a black and white wire along with a ground screw or wire and remove the knockout on the side of he junction box with a needle-nose pliers.

Position your romex connector into the knockout hole and use a lock nut to secure it. Loosen the clamp screws not entirely removing it. Cut the outer sheath of the NM cable with your romex stripper, six inches will do. Then, remove the insulation from the exposed wires about ¾ inches. Slide the wide in the romex connector and into the junction box and secure it in place by tightening the clamp screw on the connector. Attach the ground wire connected to the NM cable to the ground screw or wire on the dishwasher. Use a wire connector if it is a wire-to-wire connection.

Secure the white wires with a wire connector and do the same on the two black wires. Cover the wire connectors with electrical tape for additional safety. Reattach the junction box cover or replace it if you desire. Connect the hoses for drainage and water feeding and position the dishwasher back in place. Turn the dishwasher back on and check if everything is running perfectly.
