How do I refurbish old cabinets?

Restoring old furniture (or new ones that have just shown too much wear and tear) need not be difficult or time-consuming. The tips in these articles will show you how easy and convenient it is to reuse old furniture that you can refurbish to suit your tastes.

1. First, you would need your base furniture, which can be an old cabinet you put away in the garage or something you bought from a yard sale.

2. Handles and knobs from doors, drawers, or legs must be removed. You can then have them re-plated separately, especially if the plating has worn off. Old cabinets usually have steel that has brass or copper plating.

3. Using a heat stripper or a hot air gun, remove the old paint by moving the gun in a circular motion so as not to excessively apply heat to any specific part, as this may scorch the wood. When the paint begins to form bubbles, get a putty knife and scrape the paint up. Do this gently so as not to gouge or leave scratches on the wood.

4. Sanding. Use sanding to achieve your desired finish. If you want it to appear like a vintage piece, you can choose to leave previous dents, nicks, and gouges that the previous owner made. If you decide otherwise, make sure that you use putty to fill in the defects so that the paint will be smooth.

5. Before painting, stain it with your desired color and let it dry. Some woods may require specific conditioners in order to have a more uniform color.

6. Before painting, apply a single coat of primer.

7. After the stain has dried, apply the finish that you want. Use light and gently strokes so as to avoid bubbles.

8. Use X0000 steel wool or sandpaper that has 220-400 grit to sand the finished surfaces lightly so as to allow the next coat to adhere to the bottom coat and to smooth any defects during painting.

9. After letting the finish cure for a while, you can now reattach the hardware. Now, all you have to do is to move the piece to where you want it to be.
