Wood working as a hobby?
Hi all, for a while now I have been thinking about doing some wood working in my spare time, just carving and stuff like that, want to make a chess set or something. Just wondering if anyone knows what type of wood is best, where I can get it and how much it costs. Would also be great if anyone knows what sort of tools and and how much, they can be too.
Thanks for looking guys.
Ok, I know it can be a hobby, I guess I phrased the question wrong, just really looking for info on it.

Here’s one place that sells supplies and tools. There are several on the internet that have the same sort of things. Just do a search on carving supplies. You can get down to comparing prices between them.

It’s a terrific hobby. The choice of wood is up to YOU, Your eye, your taste, and your wallet. You can get wood almost anywhere… lumberyard, backyard, the woods !!
For carving, I prefer a tight grain, hardwood, local and inexpensive. I have tons of oak of several varieties here on the ranch.
Tools can range from the most basic pocket-knife, to expensive carving sets, lathes, band-saws, table-saws, etc.
Here are some tool sources I use:

I’d start with scrap wood and LOTS of practice !!
